Encaustic Workshops

Update:  Currently not offering workshops due to being very busy with a new baby.  I might begin workshops again at some point in the future, so sign up for my email newsletter to be alerted when they start.

My artwork is created with encaustic paint which is beeswax, resin and powdered pigment that you melt and apply in layers to your surface. It’s an ancient medium that is having a revival due to it’s versatility and lovely luminosity.  I offer a variety of 3 hour workshops in my private studio that will introduce you to the wonderful world of encaustic painting.  All supplies are included unless otherwise specified, but you will want to bring your own apron or smock to protect your clothes.  If you are new to encaustic I recommend starting with one of my beginner courses before moving on to more advanced techniques.

Tactile Texture

This intermediate encaustic class will build on your knowledge to create interesting textures in our paintings.  We will learn about both embedded and raised texture, and there will be a variety of texture tools for us to experiment with.  You should expect to complete 1-2 paintings to take home and display!

Imbedding Images

This intermediate encaustic class will explain how to incorporate your photographs and drawings into your encaustic paintings.  Techniques we will be covering include photocopy transfers, graphite and pastel transfers, drawing on silk tissue paper, and metallic heat transfer paper.  You should expect to complete 1-2 paintings to take home and display!  *Come with your favorite drawings or images, and if you want to transfer a photograph email me the image and I can adjust and print it to use in class (or you can use my collection of photocopy images in class)*

Stencils and Masks

This intermediate encaustic class will have you working with stencils and masks to create interesting designs, shapes, and effects with your paintings.  Bring some of your favorite heat resistant stencils if you have them, or any images you wish to turn into a stencil.  We will be working with both store bought stencils (from Stencil Girl), and learning to create our own.  You should expect to complete 1-2 paintings to take home and display!

Collage Creations

Learn the basics of encaustic with this beginners workshop.  In this class we’ll create collages with a variety of paper, pressed plants, thread, and clear encaustic medium (beeswax).  We will learn the history of encaustic, studio safety, how medium is made, fusing with a heat gun, and how to use an iron.  You should expect to complete 1-2 paintings to take home and display!  *Although collage materials will be provided, feel free to bring special paper, drawings, and other material to use in your collage*

Layers and Lines

This beginning encaustic workshop will introduce you to working with pigmented wax (colors!), while learning the history of encaustic, studio safety, how medium is made, fusing with a heat gun, and how to use an iron.  You will also learn the techniques of layering colors, scraping back, incising, and inlaying colors.  You should expect to complete 1-2 paintings to take home and display!

Classes must be paid for in full by cash, check or credit card prior to the class to reserve your spot. After your payment is received you will receive a confirmation email, information about the classes, and a map to my private studio space.

Class space is limited to 6 students and fill up quickly.

Private Workshops and Traveling

If you are interested in booking me for a private workshop or having me visit your school or workplace to demo or teach encaustic painting, contact me with the details and I’ll give you an estimate.  I generally charge $30 per hour, but large groups, travel time, and special supplies will be a factor.
